Neighborhood overviewAkrotiri has several safe sandy beaches all within a 5 minute drive of the house (2km the nearest beach). Stavros being the closest, a scenic 25 minute level walk away.
The bay provides a safe haven for those of you who want to relax and soak up the sun. The beach is dominated by the impressive volcanic mountain range of Stavros. The beach Kantina provides light snacks, refreshments and a cold beer served in iced glasses. Snorkelling is very popular throughout the Akrotiri, a perfect way to enjoy the abundant sealife.
The beautiful, blue-flag-awarded golden sandy beaches of Tersanas, Kalathas and Stavros are a short driving distance from the villa (2 km far). A few lovely restaurants with greek and international cuisine are nearby.
Stavros is a beautiful cove with a small harbour where the Oscar winning Zorba the Greek movie was filmed. The area is ideal for relaxing, unwind holidays and it has many monasteries and caves waiting to be explored in the mountain range which runs along the length of the peninsular. There are plenty of local supermarkets, restaurants and bars offering international cuisine, while horse riding facilities, sailing and scuba diving are nearby.
Stavros is the nearest village being a 2 minute drive or a 25 minute walk away. It has 2 mini-markets and several Tavernas and Cafes.
Chorafakia is a 3 minute drive away. It has 1 mini-market, 4 restaurants, 2 cafes, a hairdressers, car hire and a petrol station.
Kounapoudiana is a small town, 15 minute drive away. Its has a variety of shops, restaurants and cafes, including banks and chemists.The affluent town of Chania is a 20 minute drive away and is well worth a visit.
Chania is the second largest town on Crete and is steeped in history, having been invaded by many countries over the years, all of which have left their mark, for example Venitian Boathouses, Roman Temples and Turkish Minarets can all be found in this beautiful old town.
Chania has plenty to offer, a variety of shops, museums, galleries, openair cinema and a theatre.
Walking tours of the town are available. The centrepoint is the Agora indoor market, selling herbs and spices, olives and other fresh produce of Crete.
The classic, picturesque old harbour of Chania is surrounded by gift shops and cafes and is a great place to watch the world go by.
For keen walkers, there are a number of spectacular walks including the famous Samaria Gorge walk, which covers 11 kms of breathtaking scenery.
The other well known gorge walks are the Imbros, Zakros and Agia Irini.
Many archaeological sights are found throughout Crete, the most famous being Knossos, which is a 3 hrs drive away, in Heraklio.
More local sites include Faiasana and Aptera.
Elafonissis is an impressive area of white sand banks drifting out into the sea, its one of natures natural beauties.
Georgioupolis has one of the largest freshwater rivers running through the town into the sea.
It hosts the loggerhead sea turtle and is a very popular tourist destination.
Just north of Georgioupolis is the islands only freshwater lake, called Kournas, where pedalloes can be hired.
Getting aroundA car is necessary and taxis can be arranged.Let me know if you wish to rent a car and i will be more than happy to help you since i cooperate with local rent a car company
